Monument Valley Tribal Park, Arizona & Utah
No travelogue of the American West would be complete without a selection of images from Monument Valley. Now a Navajo tribal park, Monument Valley is a high desert region on the border of Arizona and Utah. It is a plateau which is broken up with colorful mesas, buttes, and fantastic rock formations. Most people are probably quite familiar with Monument Valley without realizing it. The area has been a scenic backdrop in countless movies. Perhaps the most vivid and beautiful portrayals come from the old black and white John Ford westerns. For those who need Monument Valley in black and white, check out the two below. Note how much clouds enhance a black and white picture.
A solitary visitor takes in a typical Monument Valley vista. The open nature of the terrain gives rise to the feeling of the "big sky", of a land which is endless. While we live today in an era of six hour coast to coast travel the concept of a west with "wide open spaces" and endless opportunity will always be an elemental part of the American psyche.
