Las Vegas, Nevada - Visit Las Vegas and See the World!by Joseph A. Sprince - Photography by Gerald B. Allen
During the late 1980's and early 90's, the popular trend in Las Vegas was towards "family entertainment". The result was the construction of many "theme" hotels and attractions. The themes ranged from all over the world and covered the past, present, and future. This presented the opportunity for several interesting photos. Pictured right is the Excalibur Hotel which has a medieval Europe theme. The hotel's restaurants, decor, and attractions generally follow the same theme, including jousting tournaments and a "fire breathing dragon" in the moat.
As you cross the Excalibur's moat on this drawbridge, you exit the middle ages and enter... New York City?! (The metal bar in center is a roller coaster ride!)
The New York, New York Hotel recreates the skyline and many of the famous landmarks of that city. The different areas of the hotel's huge casino depict the city's various neighborhoods.
Take a trip to ancient Egypt at the Luxor Hotel. The main building is the giant glass pyramid (left) situated behind a great rendition of the Sphinx. Above right, the inside of the pyramid is essentially hollow with the guest rooms against its walls. Rooms are entered by balconies open to the inside. (Note the rows of fluorescent corridor lights.) An upper floor room is a facinating experience with impressive views outside AND inside. The buildings and objects at the bottom of the picture are part of the "theme" attractions on the mezzanine.
Left, the "Fremont Street Experience" in downtown Las Vegas. A six block section of Fremont Street has been converted to a car-free, outdoor walking plaza. The canopy is one of the world's largest video screens extending nearly the full length of the plaza. At the top of every hour, an entertaining audio/video show is presented and lasts about ten minutes.
Pictured right is the famed neon cowboy fronting the Pioneer Casino. The cowboy appears in nearly every Hollywood movie about Las Vegas.
Take a quick trip to Africa over at the Mirage Hotel. The famed entertainers, Siegfried and Roy, maintain a small but elaborate zoo here, featuring their exotic animals. Photo, right, is a rare white lion. The hotel also features an exotic aquarium as well as a large dolphin pool. Next door, you can experience the glories of ancient Rome at Caesar's Palace.
